The Resident Retreat for Future Academicians is a two-day informal
meeting that seeks to expose young physicians to the challenges and
rewards of careers in academics. The Retreat was instituted by the
SID in 2001 in response to data that showed the number of
academicians in dermatology was rapidly decreasing. The same data
also indicated that the number of physician-scientist first-time NIH
grant applicants would soon reach critically low numbers and that
the pool of residents entering careers in academics would continue
to decrease. Today, the SID continues to acknowledge the ongoing
need to recruit and train young physicians in physician-scientist,
physician/health services research and teaching careers.
