Resident Retreat for Future Academicians

In 2001, the SID instituted the Resident Retreat for Future Academicians in an attempt to attract and retain young physicians in physician-scientist, physician/health services research careers and dermatology education.  Department Chairs or Residency Training Program Directors were asked to nominate first- and second-year dermatology residents who were thought of as good candidates for research or academic careers to participate in a special retreat held at the Airlie Center in Warrenton, Virginia.  In 2009, the program was appended to the SID Annual Meeting held in Montreal, Canada.

Residents met with leaders in the field of dermatologic research, who are nationally-recognized physician-scientists.  They discussed dvantages of careers in research and opportunities for advancement in academic careers.  Attendees received a diploma from the SID that accredits the selection process and attendance at the retreat.  In addition, residents were strongly encouraged to attend the SID Annual Meeting which began immediately following the close of the retreat, where they can participate in and benefit from programming designed specifically for residents.  These programs include the Clinical Scholars Track, Resident Track, Irvin H. Blank Forum and the Resident Fellow Dinner Sessions.
