Trainee Retreat

2024 SID FUTURE LEADERS RETREAT

 

The Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) Retreat is designed to provide Dermatology Residents and PhDs in training, or pursuing a post-doc fellowship, with an overview of different pathways available to those interested in pursuing a career in dermatologic research. The novel program will feature a special emphasis on grants and grant writing, as well as establishing a niche that will provide solid footing on today’s research career path. The Retreat agenda topics will focus on providing attendees with the tools needed to create a successful and sustainable career in research.

The Future Leaders Retreat program will take place in advance of the SID Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, in Dallas, Texas. All attendees should plan to arrive at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas on Tuesday, May 14th to join us for a networking reception.

APPLICANT CRITERIA FOR PHDs
  • Applicants must be in a PhD training program, or have a PhD or MD degree
  • Applicants must be a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a post-graduate research fellowship
  • Applicants must be nominated by their Lab Director or Principal Investigators to be considered
  • Applicants should be pursuing a non-clinical career with a focus in skin biology, career in research Academia, Industry, or Government
APPLICANT CRITERIA FOR RESIDENTS
  • Applicants must have a MD or MD/PhD degree
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a US Dermatology Residency program
  • Applicants must be nominated by their Department Chairs and/or Program Directors to be considered
  • Ideal applicants are in the first or second year of their residency, or in a Post-Doctoral Fellowship.
  • Topics are intended to provide information for them during the duration of their training.
  • Applicants should be on track for research or academic careers
CANDIDATE SELECTION PROCESS
  • The Retreat Committee will review submitted candidate materials
  • Approximately 50 attendees will be selected to attend the retreat
  • Selected candidates will be notified in March 2024
PLEASE NOTE: ACCEPTED CANDIDATE’S RESPONSIBILITY
  • Selected candidates are expected to stay for the balance of the week and attend the SID Annual Meeting
  • Registration to the SID Annual Meeting is not covered with acceptance to the Retreat
  • It is suggested that all candidates register to the SID Annual Meeting early, to take advantage of the reduced registration rates
ACCEPTED CANDIDATE’S ROOMING RESERVATION
  • The SID office will arrange for one (1) night of accommodations for the selected candidate, at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas, for Tuesday, May 14th
  • The Hilton Anatole is the headquarter hotel for the SID Annual Meeting
  • The rooming reservation at the Hilton Anatole will be placed in selected candidate’s name
  • It is suggested retreat applicants wait for confirmation of acceptance to the retreat, before making rooming reservations at the Hilton Anatole
  • The SID will not cover any third-party rooming reservation charges for accommodations at the Hyatt or any other property, to be reimbursed if made through a third party (Expedia, Hotels.com, Travelocity)
  • Selected candidates will need to contact the Hilton directly after receiving confirmation of acceptance; to extend the candidates reservation for the balance of the SID Annual Meeting
  • The SID covers the expense for meals associated with the Retreat.  Meal that are include; Retreat Welcome Reception on Tuesday, May 14th, Retreat breakfast and grab and go lunch on Wednesday, May 15th
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CANDIDATE’S DEPARTMENT
  • Departments must agree to pay for the selected candidates travel and/or flights to and from the Retreat
  • Selected Retreat attendees are expected to attend the SID Annual Meeting to obtain all of the benefits of sustained exposure to the SID community
  • Registration to the SID Annual Meeting is not covered with acceptance to the retreat.
DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBILITY
  • Departments must agree to permit selected Retreat attendees to be available to attend the entire retreat program to reap the benefits of to the SID community.

SUBMITTING APPLICATION MATERIALS ONLINE

  • Ensure the applicant has the following documentation in advance of completing the online application.
  • Submission of Three (3) Documents Required for Consideration to Future Leaders Retreat
    • Nomination Letter
      • Letter from Lab Director or Principal Investigator describing candidate’s research potential
    • Abstract – OR – Letter of Intent (LOI)
      • Abstract that has been submitted to the 2024 SID Annual Meeting – OR
      • Letter of Interest (LOI) detailing candidate’s research interest and goals
    • Candidate’s Bio-sketch – Limited to two (2) pages

Blank Forum

The Blank Forum is presented each year during the SID’s Annual Meeting. Inspired by Harvard Medical School Research Fellow Irvin H. Blank, PhD, the session provides insights into several topics that would be of interest to those in Resident/Post-Doc training programs.

The SID’s Committee on Education is in charge of the content for the forum on an annual basis.  Please contact us via meetings@sidnet.org with any topic suggestions that you might have.

Translational Symposia

This special session sets the stage for the entire scientific program at the beginning of the Annual Meeting, connecting the Basic and Clinical content of the meeting with a specially chosen theme.

Diversity and Inclusion Seminars/Workshops

The SID’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion has been charged with planning and executing content focusing on various types of D & I topics. These types of programming have and will come in forms of taped video presentations, in-person sessions at the time of the Annual/Virtual Meeting(s), white papers, and journal articles to name a few. Sponsored Symposia

In collaboration with many of today’s leading pharmaceutical companies, the SID creates partnerships that are then able to deliver scientific sessions with world renown thought leaders that provides value to our community. Many of these sessions occur as a part of the SID Annual/Virtual Meeting(s).

Virtual Programming

The SID is exploring ways to deliver more frequent content for its members and scientific community via virtual programming that encompasses a myriad of topics. Potential offerings may include content aimed at Residents and Post-Doc Fellows, Senior and Junior faculty who want to elevate their current positions, best practices in submitting manuscripts to journals, and peer-networking advise among others.
